Subscribe to our free newsletter and find out more about The Western Region, recently described by one visitor as “The World’s best kept secret”.

How will the drought affect this year’s harvest of grapes?  We talk to one of the regional wine producers to hear his prediction for this year´s vintage.

We hope that you enjoy our window onto the Oeste and  will share it with your family and friends.

Who we are

Sabores de Portugal is run by Robert and Sue who share a passion for Portugal and for the Western Region (the Oeste) in particular.

Originally from the UK (Sue would object to that nomenclature as she is a Glaswegian!) we have spent many years working in different parts of the world meeting people and getting to know local customs and traditions.  It was after working at Expo `98 Lisbon that we decided to live in Portugal.  Some 7 years later our dream has been realised and we want to share with you, our customers and friends on the internet, the delights and pleasures of living in the ‘Oeste’

This is our preliminary website.  Our store will be open for business in September and we look forward to your orders in a few weeks time.

Where are we?

We found our home in a renovated farmhouse in the village of Formigal near to Caldas da Rainha (The Queen´s hot springs)  a well known spa since Roman times and founded as a Thermal Hospital in 1485.   We share our home with three dogs and with family and friends as they pass by.

What  do we do?

We have established our internet gift business here and, in the Mediaeval town of Obidos, we manage a shop specialising in regional produce and crafts on behalf of the Western Region Tourism office.  We sell only the best of local produce, ranging from Arts and Crafts to Wines, Liqueurs, Fruit and homemade cakes and biscuits.  Drop into our store and taste the jams from Doces de Amelia, or the Pear cake from Zira of Cadaval.  Ask our staff about the region and they will be only too happy to tell you about the history of the windmills, the long sandy beaches or the eagles soaring over the Serra de Montejunto.   You will hear about the Wine Festival at Bombarral, the Alcobaca festival of  Doces e Licores Conventuais (Sweets and Liqueurs from the Convents - the monks and nuns still know how to look after the body corporate!) and the Chocolate Festival at Obidos along with anecdotes about the production of Agua Pé (literally water from the foot) a very light wine made by adding water to the crushed grapes. And don’t forget the golf courses where the greens roll down to the sea and tricky water features make the holes a real test for your skill.

We sell gift baskets on the Internet.

Many of our suppliers and producers have been supported by Leaderoeste, a programme that encourages sustainable businesses in rural areas.   We promote and encourage these same businesses through our Website and our Gift Baskets.  In Obidos, we operate the Loja do Oeste (Shop of the Rural West) in partnership with Western Tourism Office and Leadereoeste.   In our gift baskets, we tell you about the people who make the produce and we include some really interesting information about the region, the traditions, the culture and the fantastic countryside and beaches.   We have a store full of information to help you get to know the Western region of Portugal.

Come back soon and browse our selection of gift baskets and food hampers.  Corporate gifts; Unique gifts; Birthday gifts; Anniversary gifts; Gifts for him; Gifts for her; chocolate gifts; ginginha of Obidos; gourmet gift baskets; thank you gifts.  We´re sure you will find something that takes your fancy and tempts your palate.  We look forward to meeting you on our website with a shopping cart full of delicious goodies.
